Sunset, you show yourself to me
I reach only to fail, for this life
Has not allowed me the time to love
The beauty our Earth failed to receive
From those she let mutilate her splendour.

The halo of humanity was never golden
Always did darkness pollute the purity,
And never could the demon race withstand
Their constant fear and insecurity.

I waltz on a cliff high and proud
My only partner to hold is misery
We step off the ledge, onto a cloud
Only to fall into the hell within me.

Did the mushroom-cloud fail to penetrate
My aura of self-indulgence,
And innate lust for greed?
Here I find the one-way highway
Which a rich man told me led to happiness
And a peace filtered with a medicine
He called gold.

A shadow's heart resides within me today
The fallout caught me unaware
Apocalyptic visions fuel the anger I breed
As they plunge into darkness,
I am already there.

I'm dancing on the edge of the world
I no longer have a partner to hold
Numbly I cry as dawn is slowly unfurled,
And again the painful story is told.

Daniel Eley is a young, up-and-coming author who writes both poetry and prose. He likes to take the traditional structures of both forms and attempt to create something unique.
He believes that both poetry and prose should flow, and ideally not be restricted by form but instead enhanced by the way it is structured. He has been published in his local paper 'The Evening Star', with a poem named "Sacrifice" that reflected on those lost in the First World War. A feature article on the same subject accompanied the poem, named "Poignant reminders of Dignity and Pride".
He has also had poetry published in the Essex University newspaper "The Rabbit", and has received positive praise from published authors Martin Waites and Keith Brooke.
